Sound absorption, clearly explained
In short. Sound absorption is the ability of a material to take in sound rather than reflect it. The more absorption in a room, the shorter the reverberation.
Reverberation time
The time it takes for sound to decay by 60 dB after the source stops. The shorter it is, the calmer the room and the clearer the speech.
Absorption coefficient αw
A number between 0 (everything reflected) and 1 (everything absorbed), measured in a laboratory. All Stillr standard panels (M, L, XL, Moon) offer identical acoustic performance, with a weighted absorption coefficient of αw = 0.70. The absorption values, determined by the KU Leuven acoustics laboratory, are available on request.
Frequencies
Speech is concentrated mainly around 500 and 1000 Hz; that is where a solution needs to perform well.
